They are still flocking to Sitex

A RECESSION may be underway but Sitex, the year’s last major electronics fair, was still packing in the crowds when it opened its doors yesterday.
.After all, the fair provides consumers with a great opportunity to find bargains on the latest gadgets and consumer electronics.
.Manager Mr Sia Chye Whatt, 48, said: “Every quarter, you have a tech fair so I usually wait as I’m not in a hurry. I haven’t got retrenched yet, so I can still buy. It doesn’t affect me right now.”
.The organisers are expecting up to 800,000 visitors by the time the fair ends on Sunday.
.Mr Edwin Low, chief executive of Singapore Expo said: “ We hope that the demand for electronic products and gadgets will remain strong. Amid the economic downturn, consumers will be more conscious and want to stretch their dollar.”
.Last year, 751,800 visitors spent$40 million at Sitex and the organisers expect the cash tills to keep ringing this year.
.“We are not expecting a significant impact on reduced spending yet; maybe the effect will be more prominent next year,” said Mr Low.
